  • Great fiction

The story is breathtaking, we desperately want to know the fate of the characters and discover more about this fantasy world, its politics and its physic laws. Definitely a science fiction masterpiece.

  • Oriental steam punk

A somewhat gothic fantasy, set in a curious world where regional variations to the laws of physics are accepted, but familiar themes abound. The struggle to define self is played out in a society where magic is a natural talent, and every individual sexless until they choose either gender, or none. The struggles against authority, on a personal level rebelling against a parent, in the larger world against a powerful, but corrupt, regime, are told in a somewhat distant narrative, where the characters interact in outwardly restrained, but internally seething, scenarios. Theatrical scenes of raw violence are mitigated in their impact by magical abilities to heal. The scenery is pretty, yin/yang cycles familiar, a new generation clashes with the establishment, and heroes pay the price to secure their just rewards. Satisfying fiction without dramatic highs or lows. Its unique ecology, economy of detail and familiar cultural flavours suit the modern audience's dialogue about political machinations, gender equality and environmental concerns.
