  • The Restoration of Rome.

This book is somewhat disjointed. It's like a group of different historical subjects cobbled loosely together. Some are very interesting and some less so. The workings of patronage in Carolingian times is fascinating and very instructive to the workings of our times in the west where governments have given away large portions of their revenue base and can no longer balance their books. The centre will not hold in such circumstances. The chapters on the workings of the papacy are dull going.

    Thanks for your feedback!
