  • Good for basic Chinese learners

This was the first Chinese reader that I bought, and I found it very useful for improving my reading skills, vocabulary and understanding of grammar. I found reading this book a bit tricky at first, but by the time I reached the end, it was much easier as my skills had improved. The book uses 300 unique characters and any rare characters are listed in an index. I recognise about 750 characters overall, and never needed to use a dictionary . My son only knows about 500 characters, and he was able to read this with support from me. So I think if you know 600-800 characters, this is probably about the right level for you. If you know less, then expect to be going slowly at first and using a separate dictionary. After the first two chapters, the characters will be more familiar to you. In my copy of this book, there is no easy way to flick between the text and the index, but I have since bought another book from this series, which allows you to quickly look up the rare characters by clicking on them. For this book, I printed the character index and kept it handy. You may find that not having an easy way to look them up encourages you to remember them, though. The story is a well-known children's story and due to the simple language needed, there is not much of a plot, but it is interesting enough to keep you reading and learning. Note that to read this on an e-reader, you may need to install the SimHei font or something similar. This is not hard on a Kobo reader - google it. If you don't do this, then many characters will appear as blank squares.

  • Simple but satisfying to read as a beginner/interm

This is the first book I've read in Chinese. :-) Most of the meaning is easy to grasp. I didn't understand every sentence but it didn't really matter. New hanzi are introduced slowly and there's plenty of repitition to help you learn the words. Will definitely be getting other books in this series. It's a great way to practice your Chinese without it feeling like hard work (assuming you can already recognisea good chunk of the characters).

    Thanks for your feedback!
