  • The Secret History

A brilliant book I totally recommend it. I read The Goldfinch by the same author and enjoyed it so much I went straight onto The Secret History, which is easily as good.

  • An obsessively gripping read.

From the first few pages I was hooked. I loved the literary and historical references, and the erudition of the central characters, but it was the gradual unveiling of the destructive effects of the erosion of morality that kept me reading, and refused to let me rest. Reading this book wasndeeply unsettling, but as compulsive as a thriller. My first Donna Tartt, but I am looking forward to another; after a decent recovery period.

  • Just okay

Found it a little slow and hard going in places. That's all I have to say about it. Disappointing after The goldfinch.

  • Erudite but empty

It's a very educated and well written. I did not like one of the main characters though and the book read like a description of the extremes the offspring of the elite could sink to.
