  • Pure art

Some writers master language and some master storytelling, but very few are able to achieve absolute genius on both levels. Kinsale is arguably the most purely gifted of all the modern romance authors. She can send readers on the most intensely personal and agonizing emotional journey, but earns it all by giving the utmost care and respect to every detail of story and character. I'm not typically a fan of tortured heroes because they are too often used solely as a implausible plot device in the hands of lesser authors. As a counselor to victims of sexual abuse, I can honestly say I've never read a more tender and perceptive account of a survivor's struggle toward healing and the power of unconditional love and acceptance to help achieve it. I will remember this book long after I put it down.
