  • Thought Provoking

This book is a real page turner. It's hard to believe it's a debut novel. Matthew loses his brother, who has Downs, in an accident when they are children. This story tells of how a mothers grief can impact on a child ( at first I thought Matthew was a victim of mauchauseens by proxy) and how a young man can descend into mental illness . Grief for a loved one is at the centre of the story. The full story of the accident is held back and I read on eager to know more. It was heart wrenchingly sad. The book also raised some really interesting questions about how we treat mental health issues and the stigma attached to it. About how you can get caught up in the system even. This side of the story feels valid and is, the author is a mental health nurse. Don't let the fact that mental health is a theme put you off. This book is about what happens to a family who lose someone, about guilt and about hope ultimately. I recommend it highly.

  • Shock of the fall

There was no suspense in this book, really well written. I hope this guy writes a humorous book sometime soon, you just know he could.
