    Lost In Translation?

This author has apparently sold a lot of books in this series in Germany. If that is so perhaps something was lost in the translation to English. I found the prose rather pedestrian - perhaps it was better in German - and overall lacking atmosphere considering it is set in 1930 Germany as the threats from Nazis and Communists hover on the sidelines of the story. The lead character was mildly interesting (a slightly roguish cop) but it lacked suspense as the chief villain was obvious from early on. The ending was rather like a ripping yarn from the period, ironic as the setting for the story was the commercial film industry of the time. Disappointing as the story really didn't given an insight into this crucial period of German history. I won't be reading this author again.
