  • Great Read !

The Silent Friend is not what I expected at all but I have no complaints , it was so good. You are quickly drawn in to Laura's life and as she leaves for vacation with her friends you don't expect anything bad to happen. But it does. Laura is a survivor , so is Sandy. You learn how easy it is to say, why me, why did I survive. How easy it is to say, what did I do wrong raising my kids? You feel just as bad and as guilty if not more so. I don't want to say much more because its better to go in blind to the book and follow the author's trail. What a trail it is. The Silent Friend will stay with me for a long time , it is such a thought provoking read and I loved it.

  • Really Enjoyed Thid

The themes of this book were friendship, parenthood, overcoming trauma and fear of the unknown. This book was well written and intelligent, it drew me in from the first chapter and I couldn't put it down. The prose is subtle and beautiful without getting too far away from the reality of the world---and that reality is what's so special about this book. The plot is quietly terrifying, but not in a way that make me scared to read it, nor was it too much to handle considering everything else that's going on in the world right now. I was desperate to find out what happened in the end. You will be too when you read this book, and you should. Folks who are looking for a traditional thriller or an easily solved mystery won't get that here; this is much richer and more challenging than the average read. I'll be thinking about this one for a long time and that means it is something special.

  • Heartbreakingly brilliant

I can’t believe I have never read a book by Diane Jeffrey before! What a massive rock I had been hiding under all this time! Well, I am so glad that The Silent Friend popped up on my radar so I could crawl out from underneath it and be introduced to another fantastic author! The Silent Friend is not the story I expected it to be, but ended up being so much more. While the blurb does not mention the catalysis of the story, I do have to say that it does deal with a mass shooting, so for those of you that have been affected by this, it may be a trigger for you. The story is an interesting exploration of the impacts to relationships of family and friends as a result of a terror attack. It plays out over duel timelines with the narrative alternating from the present to the recent past and even though it is at times a tough read, I like how Diane Jeffrey focused more on the emotions of the characters than of the act itself. I really enjoyed Diane Jeffrey’s style and through writing that is so vivid, I felt like I was also part of the story experiencing it with the characters. The writing is on point, the narrative is strong and it is just so raw and honest. She really goes deep into the psyches of the two main characters, who have both been incredibly well written. The Silent Friend is one of those books that gets under you skin and will stay with you for a long time to come. It is highly emotive, powerful, compelling and it just takes you over. I am so glad that I have now been exposed to Diane Jeffrey’s work and I look forward to reading more from her.
