  • Superb

I read this spread across a single day. It's gripping, fast, complicated, and full of writing that is both precise and - sometimes - really beautiful. There's something hard and bitter in the writing, a sense of revulsion almost. It's not cynical - in fact there are moments that could almost be called romantic - but the Wall, the GDR, the whole spying business, all feel rotten, foul. The world Le Carré draws is compelling; the sense of authenticity is absolute. It's the first Le Carré I've read : I'm looking forward to reading more.

  • Great gritty read

A classic of its time, it felt like reading in black & white. A refreshing alternative to "written for Hollywood" action thrillers. All calm menace and twists, with the occasional dash of understated violence.

Another good book. Another book that was difficult to put down, once started. Derek

  • The spy who came in from the cold.

A groudbreaking tale of bluff and counter bluff in the crazy world if pos berlin wall espionage. Bearing in mind that facts are often stranger than fiction.

  • Evocative of that time

It was like watching a B&W film. Superb, compact evocation for me of this overshadowing aspect of the era in which I grew up. What a grotesque thing was the Berlin Wall...
