    Delightfully snarky

When Max, the failed mage first meets Bryan, the Beta of a mostly gay werewolf pack he is intrigued by the novelty of such an unusual pack. But the more he learns about Bryan the more he attracted he becomes which thrilles and horrifies him at the same time. Carefully, the author reveals one tiny detail after the other about Max' history and his complex character while keeping up a fast-paced story told with wit and loads of snarky comments. Despite Bryan's inexperience it gets sexy quite quickly and I love how caringly both men treat each other. When their developing relationship is put to the test the author appropriately slows her pace, giving the characters more room for introspective. All in all a truly sexy, captivating, delightful read!

    Love it!

I enjoy gail carriger's work, but this might be my favorite book of hers. great worldbuilding, fun and lovable characters, and a solid plot.

    Big disappointment

I have read a lot of her books and have quite a few as audio books as well, but this was a big disappointment. I find it difficult to believe this is the same author. I managed to get about 20% through the book, gritting my teeth in the hope it would get better. Too much sex and much too early without the character building or wit of her other books. One to delete.

A lovey romance in a strong and convincing setting

TL;DR: The first full lenght installment in this series, at time of writing this review up to 3 novels. Get ready for some sassy characters, snarky side characters and a lovely choose-your-own-family vibe to go with your steamy m/m paranormal Romance. So this is a very fun read about a steamy Romance between emotionally fragile Max and steady but lost Bryan - or Biff, if you will. The Romance is the heart of the story, but like with all stories by this author (who writes less steamy paranormal romances, mostly historical, both traditional and less traditional, as Gail Carriger) the fun is in the way the side plots and side characters really help build this world up. For those who want to and don't mind a broader LHGBTI+ point of view, her series spanning from (sorta) Steampunk Victorian to contemporary are set in the same universe, and it's a lot of fun to track (somewhat immortal) characters in the background. If that's not your cup of tea, feel free to completely ignore that and just dive into this series. Having read all installments so far, I would suggest starting at the beginning of this series, which is this title (there is a prequel novella, but these novels are definitely a _lot_ more explicit so don't take that novella as a measure for the rest of the series; it provides fun backstory though). The romance between the two leading men definitely gets explicit and doesn't stop at the bedroom door. If that's not your cup of tea, perhaps this is not the series for you. I really connected with Max and Bryan. So far, each book has a very different vibe. This one is very much about overcoming the past; the next one has a more Dom/sub flavour; the third is again much more focused on emotional issues between the leads. What I like best about this series though is the strong world building and great care the author has taken with her characters. Mileage may vary, but I really appreciate the story-that-comes-with-the-story. If that's your kind of thing, I heartily recommend.

    Sassy and fun

I love this book. Even having read it many times before it is really hard to put down. It has a great storyline and reading it always puts a smile on my face. The story doesn’t get old because there are always more fun nuances to discover and more sassiness to appreciate. The characters are human in their failings and admirable in the way that they overcome their challenges. Plus we get a happily ever after at the end!
