  • The Summer Before the War

This novel covers many aspects of the changing face of the UK prior to WW1, the paternalistic nature, gender and so called class discrimination, changes which took another war to bring a lot of this paternalism to a close. Sadly, today the gender and social discrimination still exists with the many of the population hanging onto it like grim death. While the love story is there it does not, to my relief dominate and in the end there are only 2 obvious outcomes. Having visited many of the areas mentioned in France to pay my respects to Australian soldiers buried there, one cannot help but become emotional when reading of the horrors described in the novel.

  • The summer before the war.

An inciting tale of life pre WW1 especially the lives, gossip and power of the gentry classes. A relaxing read.
