    First impressions

Wow. I had read some spoilers and was worried that I wouldn’t find it engaging. It’s now 2:51am as I couldn’t put it down. Atwood delivers again another engaging tale of the inner lives of women who live though the unthinkable. It is a worthy successor to the Handmaids Tale.

    Gilead Revisited

Despite lacking the impact of 'The Handmaid's Tale', 'The Testaments' is a fine sequel, which delves deeper into the horrific, and crumbling, regime of Gilead. The tale is told by 3 narrators, the imposing Aunt Lydia, and two young girls, whose identities are perhaps a little too easy to deduce. The strength of the novel lies largely in Aunt Lydia's chapters which include chilling details of the origins of Gilead, political intrigues, disturbing secrets and meticulous calculation. Atwood's use of language is exquisite and powerful. The gripping plot, although contrived in places, is a real page-turner, which leads to a moving, and ultimately satisfying conclusion. The novel continued to haunt me for days after, particularly concerning the concept of sacrifice, willing or otherwise, and just how far human beings may be prepared to go to survive.

How Lucky we are to be Freek!

    Loved it!

Really enjoyed reading The Testaments. First class writing and a very enjoyable storyline, meant that I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended and very deserving of awards.
