  • Spellbinding!

I enjoyed this so much. It reminded a little of Harry Potter in parts. Really quite a different story. Will definitely be reading more by this author.

  • Enchanting

A peculiar story, that on reading the synopsis shouldn't work but absolutely does because of the brilliant writing and story telling.

  • Miniature magic

Gender power imbalance detailed on the factory floor of a doll and dolls house manufactory. A very clever and insightful story about greed, fear and power, as well as love, devotion and care told through the medium of the dolls and their makers. Fascinating!

  • Truly Excellent

Only her second book and yet Mascarenhas is fast becoming a favourite author. The characters are wonderfully well drawn, they all feel very real. This is - in some ways - a simpler tale than her first book, but it is layered with subtleties and fine detail. The little bit of magic sits so well in here, and the mixing of historical feel with modern setting is a neat touch. I loved the story and the way it played out.

    Thanks for your feedback!
