  • Great read

Loved this book from start to finish. The author made you feel like you were living the story. Will have to read his other books.

  • The Tolstoy Estate

A brilliant piece of literature - is he really Australian? His knowledge of German language and culture, combined with his understanding of Russian literature makes this novel a future award-winner.

  • A book well worth reading.

This historical fiction merges into a romance without it taking over the story. The events revolve around the 6 week German occupation of the estate formerly owned by the author Leo Tolstoy. History which is woven throughout and emerges in the dialogue showing the character's love for Tolstoy and his stories and adds a deeper layer to this book. This appreciation for and knowledge of Tolstoy is obviously Conte's own, and he has done a lovely job of communicating that through his characters. The ending was quite a surprise and sad but well done.

  • Poignant reflection of tough situation made real

I loved the way the author made you empathize with all the characters. They felt very "real" as I read this book - so much so that I still find myself thinking of them 3 days after finishing.

    Thanks for your feedback!
