    Best so far

A much more likable and plausible main character than in most of Mr Cummings' other books helps to make this a more 'grown up' novel and his best spy story to date. He has been compared to Le Carre (in which case this could be his 'The Russia House'), but still needs a bit more practice, in my view, before he becomes that good.

    Yet another amazing epic

This time, account from a non-MI6 servant (an academic). Still excellent account of MI6 and Russkie entanglement.

To Spy or not to Spy

There is a good idea at the heart of this book but it is both clichéd in the narrative and pedestrian in plot development. A good idea is not enough alone to carry a thriller. It treads similar ground to books by Owen Sela particularly The Bearer Plot and comes off second best by comparison. That said it is OK for a rainy day read.

    Disappointing

I have loved all Charles Cumming's books, but this was a disappointment. Reasonably well written, but quite difficult to believe in parts. The worst aspect was the ending which left me astonished and feeling cheated. I will hesitate before reading another by the author.
