  • Interesting but somewhat confusing

I can't say I enjoyed reading this book - the history of slavery is too disgusting. It was important though, and I now know a little more. In general I think it was very good, and I found myself quite attached to the characters. What I don't understand is why the author chose to describe the underground railroad as an actual underground railroad. In addition, some characters were referred to before they were properly introduced, which made me slightly confused. But all in all, a good book.

Fantastisch geschreven, in een adem uit gelezen. Zeer aangrijpend verhaal.

  • Horrific History

I still find it very hard, understanding how so many humans can be so cruel to others, no matter who they are. What a terrible world we Americans created out of greed and arrogance. Colson’s latest book about the two boys in “reform school” is even more distressing knowing that this happened not too long ago, in the 60s I think. Will it ever end? As far as I am concerned, it is a male issue, the hate and violence. How do we bring up our boys to be more humane?

  • Interesting but boring

I don't know what all the fuss is about. The book describes an interesting and horrific story about slavery. However, the underground railroad is described as being literally under the ground, which was not the case. Also very long and confusing passages about characters, situations. It started off as an intriguing story, but I caught myself quickly skimming through the second half as the story got more and more boring,
