  • A zany mystery

Reviewed by Liz Konkel for Readers' Favorite The Whistle Blower by Robin Merrill is the first book in the Wing and a Prayer Mystery series. Sandra is a devoted wife and mother of three that spends her days being the best at both jobs. She's thrown into her very own murder mystery after a referee dies at her son's soccer game and an angel named Bob sets her on the path to investigate the murder. Suddenly, she's sticking her nose where it doesn't belong and having to learn on the fly about the rules of soccer when she goes undercover as a referee. To top it off, her mom instincts are put to the test after she learns her son is being bullied. She's at the top of her game in a whole new field and maybe with her newfound life shake-up, she'll discover a new calling. The story is a can't-miss cozy that is completely original with a never-before-seen plot and a charm that comes to life on the page to make The Whistle Blower such a delightful and endearing read. At the focal point of the plot is our sleuth who spends her days as a soccer mom, devoted wife, and churchgoer. Robin Merrill brings to life a zany and quirky mystery that is entirely original and creative which makes for a fun and humorous treat. The tone is lighthearted with a quirkiness that stems primarily from the dynamic between Bob and Sandra. Even the mystery itself has zany elements such as going undercover as a soccer referee, talking to someone that no one else can see, and managing her home life by sleuthing around. The subplot that pairs with her murder investigation focuses on her role as a mom when she learns that her son is being bullied, which shines a light on a serious topic and uses the son as a voice. The Whistle Blower is delightful and charming with a unique premise, a zany mystery, fun characters, and a lightheartedness that will warm your heart.

  • Cute cozy mystery!

3.5 stars for this fun little cozy mystery. Sandra is bored with the day in/day out life of a mom and housewife, but gets more than she bargained for when she's the last person her son's soccer ref speaks to before he drops dead on the field. When she is later approached by an angel to help her figure out what happened to said ref on his watch, she enjoys some amateur sleuthing. As she gets close to the answers though, her own life is placed in danger. This book had a really fun premise and the story-line was rather enjoyable. While the characters lacked the depth I'm used to in my suspense novels, that is appropriate for a cozy mystery. And while Bob the angel seemed to be a bit of a bumbler, it did add some charm to the story. I enjoyed the side story about Sandra's son, Peter, and the pre-teen drama he was experiencing. And it showed that even church can be a place where bullies roam free. All in all, this was a quick and fun read - great for a summer weekend. Special thanks to the author for an e-copy of this book. I was not obligated to write a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

  • Simple and fun

I love that it gives the message that being a stay at home mom is not a bad thing and any less successful.
