A good read. A little shocking...

I first picked up this book when someone pointed out that the movie was quite different than the original tale. I found that it kept my interest and was an easy read from start to finish. I would rate is at 3.5 stars because I found the end a little lacking and because I don't necessarily feel that this story is appropriate for all youngsters as it is advertised to be. I must say, this edition is beautifully rendered and I am certain to enjoy more books from this publisher. It contains many, if not all, beautiful original illustrations and the original illustrated covers for each chapter. Wonderfully put together, seriously. Beautiful. However, I must also say that although the narrative is quite pleasant and that this book is a very easy read, I am a little shocked that small children as young as 6 years old have been encouraged to read this book. The imagery of beasts (many, many beasts) and even the Tin Woodman for that matter, being beheaded....well, I personally, would not want to read this to my nephew until he is a tad older. Nevertheless, I would still highly recommend this book. It is a classic and bearing in mind that pretty much all original fairy tales were far more gruesome that all the "Disneyafied" versions, the violence is forgivable in my opinion. Give it a read and find out what colour the ruby slippers really were!

    The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

I loved this original version of 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' and can not wait to read the rest of the Oz series. This heart-warming tale will appeal to people of all ages, from a toddler's bed-time story to a pleasure read for a 98-year-old. In short: READ IT AND LOVE IT!!!!
