  • Truthful

A beautifully written book of a subject that is far from a beautiful time in Australia’s history. Thank you.

  • Profound

This book is an important historical work, documenting the impact of colonisation on the Wiradjuri people. It is also a novel about a family that is about to lose their home because of a mine. It has many depths, and I enjoyed reading it - although it reduced me to tears at times because of the atrocities our forebears inflicted on Aboriginal people.

  • Discomforting and illuminating

There are truths in here that I knew but have airbrushed from memory. Reading this forced me to confront them. The haunting images of chained people left in the sun without any dignity whatsoever is burnt into my retina. May I never forget. A powerful piece of writing that has shaken me. I won’t say I enjoyed it as that would diminish it, but it has left me altered. And that is the benefit of words.

  • A “must read”!

Delightful language. Descriptions just slide across your brain, the ‘turn of phrase’ catches you unawares. A deep and meaningful delve into the plight of Aborigines as they had their ancient culture taken from them. I’ll read this again and again.

  • A Very Big Story

By reading novels such as this, perhaps non Aboriginal Australians can catch a glimpse of the big stories and songs of our Aboriginal brothers and sisters, and begin to listen. Perhaps begin to understand. Perhaps to heal. Perhaps to reconcile. This novel encaptures such a big story of love, pain, family, language, country, hurt, ancestors, songlines, identity, knowledge, past, present and future.
