  • County Clare Ireland 1958

Don't be put off by the title: Williams writes with humour and music as well as that genuine warmth that is not sentimental. It's like a nineteen year old boy's narration of an Irish version of Dylan Thomas's classic short story, A Visit to Grandpa's. The electricity is at last coming to the village of crumbling thatch roofed cottages with cold stone flagstone floors and peat fires and the 18th century way of life will be ended but not without being celebrated.
