  • gritty, compelling and sexy read

If you're looking for flowers and chocolates and tender declarations of love, you're not going to find that here. What you will find is a gritty, compelling story, that of Rachel and Dean as they reconnect after 10 years apart. During the 10 years since Rachel left her trailer park home and her boyfriend like a thief in the night, she's become a relatively successful lawyer and is on track to a promotion as she investigates a class action suit against a company whose workers were poisoned. On the other hand, Dean spent most of that time in jail for armed robbery, only in the last 2 years being on the road to respectability again at his warehouse job and using his meaty fists to workout his stress in a boxing arena. They were never meant to meet up again - but they do, and just like when they were teenagers, they can't keep their hands off each other. But what will be the cost to them both? There were parts of this story that I really liked and some that were somewhat disappointing. I thought the legal case aspect and Rachel's job started out really well and was very interesting, but then it kind of fizzled out for me and didn't really end up where I thought it would. I didn't feel like there was a lot of 'romance' in the story either. What there is though, is a definite sexual chemistry and connection between Rachel and Dean and the sex scenes between them are super hot. Lots of rough sex happening here, fully consensual and really emphasizing that even if they don't like each other very much to start (and for much of the story), they still have a connection. I liked their scenes together, gritty and emotional as they are. Both characters had some good parts to them, and show a lot of flaws. There is no denying that Dean acts like a jerk for the majority of the story, and truthfully isn't fully redeemed by the end either. And I'm okay with that, because after 8 years in prison, I'd find it hard to believe that he'd become a softhearted romantic man just because Rachel is in his life again. I felt like that was very true to his character. And despite his antagonistic ways, Rachel knows that she gets to him, as he gets to her. Rachel's character was interesting too, as a woman who has pulled herself up by her bootstraps and made something of herself. Giving in to Dean's sexual demands seems like a step down for her, though it's easy to see why she can't resist him. The sexual connection is all they have to start with besides some good and some painful teenage memories. It takes much of the story to establish a more meaningful and positive emotional connection, and even that is pretty rocky. But they get their happy ending, one they both deserve, one that shows there is still a lot of work ahead to build the trust again between them but that they are both willing to put in the effort. I really liked the secondary characters in this story too, ones that added scenes of friendship and scenes of tension into the mix. They definitely rounded out the story well. Truthfully, I had a hard time putting this story down once I started it, and overall I found it to be an entertaining and compelling read. 4 stars.

  • Drawn out

This book was so down out with so much useless information by the time it ended I was relieved. Usually when I read I want to see the characters continue on in some form so I can read about them....not this book or the characters.
