  • A human journey.

I devoured this book. It made chuckle, it made me think of cafes, it made me cry, but never did it bore me. The characters are all fascinating, each with a very human core, not stereotypes nor attributes just for the plot’s sake. They were human. The places they take you are breathtaking. I loved the journey. I’m certainly going to read more by the author. Really, I can’t say it enough, this book deserves to be read.

  • A though-provoking science fiction story

I did enjoy this first person narrative of a challenging space expedition. New ideas and the difficulty of communicating over a long distance and over long time. An author who I hadn't read before and I'm looking forward to reading more of.

  • As good as always, if not better

Becky Chambers never disappoints, and this book is thrilling, while weaving in science and philosophy. It’s beautiful. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

  • Overly didactic

Becky Chambers loves space. While the Wayfarers series contained satisfying interpersonal and political dramas, this work is basically Chambers’ pitch for her vision of space exploration as a purely scientific quest for knowledge. No Elon Musk antics, no exploitative mega corps, just a crew of scientists doing science. And as such, I found this novella both didactic and dull. Maybe if I were also fascinated by the idea of space, I would feel differently. But to a humanist, this book was tedious
