  • Complex, well-plotted thriller in Australia.

Chris Hammer’s storytelling is wonderful. I have read all his stories with journalist Martin Scarsden as the main character and this story “Treasure and Dirt” refers to characters and events from previous books but it is a stand-alone book with a great story about a murder in an opal town in north-western New South Wales. The new heroes, Sydney homicide detective Ivan Lucic and a local inexperienced detective, Nell Buchanan, are well described and competent in the pursuit of their duties. The detectives have to cope with canny billionaires, religious cults, drugs and family secrets and Chris Hammer writes competently about their compatibility as investigators and he makes them realistic and likeable. The story is well written and explains how the country around Finnigans Gap is a typical Australian western town with its usual problems with drought, Police procedures, abundant flies and the mannerisms of some country Australian characters. Chris Hammer’s research about mining and the present-day value of various minerals was excellent and pertains well to the story. At one stage, Ivan and Nell have to fight to save their careers, mainly because of political interference. As they are both extremely intelligent, they eventually have no trouble resolving all the complications and the story ended with all questions answered and an authentic outcome. This was a complex, well-plotted thriller that any crime fan will enjoy.

  • Great read

This is another standout read from Chris Hammer. The scenery and atmosphere of Finnigans Gap came to life and together with the great characters this was a very enjoyable read. Lots of twists and turns in the plot as well. I hope there is more to come of Ivan and Nell.

  • Gripping crime novel from Chris Hammer

A good read from Chris Hammer. Developed the characters well, the story was great and gripping to follow. I would still say Scrublands is Hammers best so far, but would still very much recommend Treasure and Dirt.
