  • A good read

Slow to start, but interesting plot, reasonably close to actual history. Not great literature, but enjoyable entertainment.

  • A Ripping Tale

I think this book would be a great read for a young adult male, more than it is for an 85 year old grandmother such as I. However, the fortunes of Vespasian have captured my interest, and I am keen to start reading the next book in this series. I chose this book for no other reason than the name of the author. My paternal great grandmother was a Fabbri, and I was simply curious about the work produced by what may be a very distant relative. I have discovered the beginning of a saga which I believe we could one day find serialized on TV. The story starts off at a gallop from the first chapter. It combines interesting details of Roman military disciplines, weaponry and history with believable fiction, all tied together with lots of political intrigue and deception, plus abundant instances of warfare resulting in copious amounts of blood and gore. The characters are well described and gain our sympthy or dislike as appropriate to the story. I became bound up in their experiences. I found the tactics used in warfare and in political manouvering very interesting. The details of the resulting blood and gore were probably more interesting to young adult males as mentioned above, than they were to me. In stark contrast, the occasional sex scenes are handled quite discretely. Thank you to the author for that. I now look forward to further following the fortunes of Vespasion.

    Thanks for your feedback!
