  • Use of weapons

A bit of a messy read.

  • A great, but tricky read

I read this book years ago, and recently re-read it as it had made an extremely strong impression on me. I'm glad I did. It's not an easy book to read, both because of its, at times, rather grim nature, but also because of its twin story arcs with opposing timelines that eventually meet in a gripping ending. I get why this is not to everyone's taste, but for me this is a classic, perhaps even his best book. If you are new to Banks's work you may be better starting elsewhere and coming to this later.

  • Use of weapons culture novel 2

Mr banks tried (in my opinion ) to use his culture sci fi scenario as a backdrop for a serious arty farty piece of literature Unfortunately, to me the backdrop is more interesting,

  • fantastically enormous adventure

The book expands nicely on the themes explored in the two previous books in the series, and also comprehensively adds to the enormity of the 'culture' in general... having read almost all of the series, looking back, this is probably one of the most important

  • A very well layered, character driven SF book

Smartly written, enthralling and surprising. A thinking man's SF book. Gets 4 starts instead of 5 due to how certain plot beats are delivered. Can't be more specific than that without risking spoilers. Nonetheless it's a book I can recommend anyone, even non-SF fans, as it's sure to cause a reaction, which is the mark of any good work.
