  • Superb Crime Fiction

What She Saw is the third instalment in the Detective Sergeant Jenna Morgan series, set in Shropshire, England. Even though I have yet to read the first two books, I jumped at the chance to read this one, and I'm so pleased I did! The story opens with teenager, Poppy, lying on her bedroom floor along with her dead boyfriend, Aiden, looking at her father who has just shot them. As Poppy plays dead her father continues his mission to kill the rest of the Lawrence family before setting fire to their home - Kimble Hall. This exciting start set the tone for the whole book and I was totally hooked. DS Jenna Morgan lives with her sister, Fliss, who is currently dating Jenna's work partner, DS Mason Ellis. As Jenna and Mason investigate, Diane Saxon strikes a great balance between the crimes and Jenna’s personal life and both are compelling to read. This captivating police procedural is very well plotted and paced and I found Jenna to be a likeable protagonist, though she was certainly not perfect. With numerous twists and good use of misdirection throughout, What She Saw held my interest. As the tension levels peaked, the shocking revelations left me reeling. A magnificent very highly recommended read. I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel at my request from Boldwood Books via Rachel’s Random Resources and NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

  • Thought-Provoking, Thrilling Read!

Never a dull moment - what a stunning read! I've already downloaded the first two in series to catch up with. Called out in the middle of the night, DS Jenna Morgan finds herself attending a house fire so large and intensive that there is no way to know if the residents were at home or not. When bodies are discovered in the ruins, the count doesn't add up to all members of the Lawrence family who lived there; so who is unaccounted for and where are they? This is an exciting and fast moving story, beautifully crafted, carefully plotted and absolutely packed with action from beginning to end. Personal details are included but nothing takes away from the crime story. There is such a lot happening! As a conscientious officer, Jenna is kept busy as other things need dealt with in her working life, but she never loses sight of the bigger picture. The characters are true to life, the story flows really well and kept me glued all the way through. Thought-provoking and thrilling with a good slice of humour, it adds up to an absolutely superb read. Definitely an author to add to your 'must not miss' read, and I'm delighted to give this all five sparkling stars!

  • A thrilling read!

Oh my goodness what a thrilling book What She Saw is! I am still breathless and I finished it a while ago! I actually couldn’t start this review until I got all my thoughts together, otherwise it would have been a jumble of words making no sense what so ever! Diane Saxon has created a story that is definitely not for the faint hearted. There were a few times where I had to stop and put it down to catch my breath, but it had me so hooked that I couldn’t tear myself away from it for too long. It really is one rollercoaster of a ride that will leave you shaken to the core! Diane Saxon kicks off the story in spectacular fashion and from there, it just keeps getting better as it goes along. It moves at a fast pace and had me furiously flicking the pages to see how it was all going to unfold. It has been very well researched and although at times I did find it could be just a bit too descriptive, this didn’t take away from my enjoyment of it. The story is the third in the Detective Sergeant Jenna Morgan series and is easily able to be read as a standalone. Diane Saxon does touch on the previous stories and gives enough information to be able to follow along and it has definitely made me want to go back and read the other two books that’s for sure. Jenna is a great character who I look forward getting to know more about. I can’t believe I haven’t been exposed to and read a book from Diane Saxon before What She Saw and I have to thank Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for introducing me to her work. I am now so eager to devour everything that she has written when I can. Everything about What She Saw just works. The striking cover which immediately draws you to it, a strong plot, a diverse bunch of characters, that all are brought together through writing that is just so engaging, really does make What She Saw an exceptional read and is one that I recommend. Thank you to Diane Saxon, Boldwood Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advanced copy of What She Saw, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

  • Page-Turner

This is the 3rd book in the Sgt. Jenna Morgan series but the first book I have read by Diane Saxon and I found that the book can be read as a standalone. The book starts out with a shocking bang as Gordon Lawrence shoots his entire family. His daughter, Poppy, escapes even though she has been shot. Gordon then sets fire to the house. Detective Sergeant Jenna Morgan is called to investigate the fire and death of the Lawrence family but the body count does not add up. Who shot this family and why? This is an excellent plot but there are multiple side plots that distract from this main plot that I found unnecessary. I enjoyed the humorous banter between Jenna and her partner, Mason. The older couple, Mr. and Mrs. Crawford were very interesting characters. Gordon Lawrence was a very scary as you didn't know what he was going to do next. I found the book to be a riveting page-turner and needed to keep reading to find out how it would end. I would highly recommend it to those who love crime thrillers. I would like to thank Boldwood Books and NetGalley for a free copy for an honest review.
