  • More than a Mystery

I really enjoyed this book and will seek out more by this author. The mystery itself was engaging but so were the characters and the history lesson. The period setting allowed for an upstairs/downstairs perspective, good sleuthing in the absence of technology and a reminder of gender expectations of the time. Never preachy or plodding; it is a page turner. So glad it is a series so I can see more of these characters.

  • Very Nice Read

A very nice blend of fact and fiction with enough twists to keep the pages turning and the ending unknown. A bit of a too easy ending but still a very good read

  • A very good historical thriller

Set in New York in 1888, this is the first in a series of mysteries/thrillers featuring Prudence Mackenzie and Geoffrey Hunter. The daughter of a prominent judge who recently passed away, Prudence and her step-mother, to whom her father had been married merely two years, is adversarial at best. At worst, Prudence suspects her stepmother of being involved in her father's death. When Prudence's fiance also dies and other odd things occur, ex-Pinkerton Hunter becomes involved in the quest for the truth. A very good read.

  • Suspenseful and evocative

I like historical mysteries and am interested in The Gilded Age in New York City. This book evokes the era beautifully.
