  • When the Guilty Cry

A film crew sent to an old abandoned orphanage finds a backpack in which are three right hands. Ridpath working with the police department is given a week to discover the identity of the dead persons from whom the hands have been hacked. At the same time the coroner has given him the same amount of time to find if evidence has been uncovered in the case of a missing sixteen year old girl who completely disappeared in 2012. Her mother is dying with leukaemia and would like to have her daughter legally declared dead before she dies. Ridpath has two dedicated and serious helpers digging for every piece of information they can find in both case. His superior officer, Turnbull, wants Ridpath to fail so he can get rid of him. In addition to the stress and urgency of these cases, Ridpath has to deal with his daughter who feels—just like her deceased mother—that Ridpath is putting his job ahead of his family. A good interesting and suspenseful police investigation—taking place during the Covid pandemic—with each team member working hard and finding cribs and drabs of clues while working against an imposed deadline. The ending is a surprise while leaving a few questions unanswered.

  • Great series, highly recommended

I have read all seven of this series and I haven't been disappointed yet. Another really good entry. If you like a good police procedural that keeps you turning the pages, this is for you. Can't wait for the next book.
