  • A promising debut

Long-time business journalist Karina Kilmore taps into her past beat with WHERE THE TRUTH LIES , an intriguing mystery set against friction between unions and big business on the Melbourne waterfront. Chrissie O’Brien fled New Zealand for a fresh start at The Argus newspaper in Melbourne, only to bring her nightmares and guilt along for the ride. Bottles and pills are close friends. Chrissie is tasked with writing a profile on an inspiring female crane operator at the docks, only for the woman to confess she’s worried then later turn up dead. A workplace accident, or murder? Chrissie digs into things over her bosses’ objections, starts receiving threats, and another worker dies. Someone is trying to quash the story and Chrissie doesn’t know who she can trust among her colleagues and sources. While a little sedate or straightforward at times, Kilmore’s debut introduces a flawed and fascinating heroine and shines brightly when it explores the internal machinations of journalism and business. Promising.
