    Phoebe’s voice

    # Review: You can’t touch my hair I’m a casual but enthusiastic listener of the authors podcasts, so her voice is familiar to me and speaks faithfully through this book. As a fan, I enjoyed it. As a fan I also encountered a few stories retold here which I’ve heard through 2 Dope Queens, if not in full then in premise or formatted to a joke on stage. These ones were disappointing, not because the content was bad but just because they were known already and I’d hoped the book would be an opportunity to explore other new anecdotes. There is plenty revealed though, from Phoebe’s own life experience which is relatable to outsiders - outsiders being anyone who is not an African-American woman raised and living in America. Phoebe writes to people on her side, including us in her jokes and showing us her world. By staging readers onside we are equipped as allies; given insight into a life experience and worldview we can’t live ourselves but can come to understand and sympathise with. Hopefully readers will find renewed feminist energy to keep checking ourselves for perpetuating toxic societal norms based on racism and oppression. An easy series of essays to read and laugh along to, Phoebe has plenty of ability to evolve as a writer should she choose to - I think she would do so well. Buy it.
