  • From eerie to bloodcurdling

Switching between the present time and historical documents from over a millennium ago, The Fen tells the story about a PhD researcher who discovers the secrets from a long and almost forgotten past. The story has a quick pace, sometimes guiding you to believe one thing just to completely turn it all around in the next chapter. Small hints and leads are sprinkled throughout the story, converging at the end as storylines come together. This combination with a quite dark plot of murder and suspense makes it hard to put the book down. While the beginning of the book is more focused on mystery and an overall eerie feeling, the second part shifts towards the more bloodcurdling horror. It's definitely not for the faint of heart, but I enjoyed it thoroughly and would recommend it to people who like horror books.

  • Poetical, dark and thrilling

Beautifully written! With mere words Baeyens is capable of creating an atmosphere of darkness that not only evolves throughout the story but also slowly seems to enclose you as you read. And as storyteller he has woven different stories, set in different times, into one thrilling novel. If you love to lose yourself in mystical pastures, medieval legends and dark fantasy/science fiction; you're in for a treat!
