  • A long long read

I bought this book ages ago just after it had been the radio 4 book at bedtime. I hadn't heard all of the episodes, but it seemed to be engaging and exciting and I wanted to know how it ended. I then read that hardly anyone who buys it finishes it so it languished on my Kobo. Finally I decided to grasp the nettle and start reading. I could not believe the number of pages in the first chapter - I don't use a very large font. By the time I got to the end of the chapter I searched he book on line and found the real book is 770 pages long. The story is good, but the book drags in many places. There is too much setting the scene in New York before the events in the Met. It seemed like a million words before Theo got to Hobie. Los Vegas was interminable and so it went on. In between the pages written, it seems, on the basis of why use one word when 50 will do there are sections of pure excitment and incredibly good writing which kept me reading. The ending of the story was good, but why the long philosophical ending of the book? I have read many books which have won prizes and a lot of them suffer from being over wordy and over written. This is one of those books.

  • The goldfinch

The story draws you in trough the eyes of a thirteen year year old boy. Then follows a lot of chaos before the author allows you to take a fresh breath of air. A remarkable story with unforgettable characters and big life lessos: true or not true for you to decide.

Loved it. Sometimes a little over wordy but a great story, like nothing I've ever read before

  • Literary masterpiece

Beautifully written, intricately woven and compellingly heartfelt. It touches on the human condition so delicately. The dichotomy we live..both alone and yet not. Donna’s ability to paint our own internal dialogue is on a page is exquisite. Have not read something this good in a while...I loved this book!
