A rapid-fire roundup of the most anticipated books coming out July 18 – 31, 2023

If you know the name Chuck Tingle, then his new book Camp Damascus—a horror story set in a gay conversion camp in the mountains of Montana—will be somewhat confusing to you, as it includes none of the hallmarks of Tingle’s singular oeuvre. You’ll also be confused to see endorsements from authors N.K. Jemisin and T. Kingfisher, who praise the book unreservedly. If you’ve never heard of Tingle, then never mind all of this and check out this inventive genre debut.

If you thought Martha Wells was done with Murderbot: check out the illustrated short story Compulsory. Pierce Brown’s Red Rising series also sees a new installment—the full-length Light Bringer.

Abeni's Song is the start of a new series by P. Djèlí Clark, author of the Dead Djinn series of novels and novellas. The new book is for younger readers, and features a young heroine in an African-inspired fantasy setting, where she must learn to wield magic after evil forces sweep away everyone she loves.

If you love your sports motorized, check out Guenther Steiner’s account of a year in F1 racing. If you love your sports… scripted… check out Tod Gordon’s humbly titled Tod is God: The Authorized Story of How I Created Extreme Championship Wrestling.

At the interface between humans and the natural world, there’s Beastly: The 40,000-Year Story of Animals and Us and Wasteland: The Secret World of Waste and the Urgent Search for a Cleaner Future.

Recently there’s been a lot of attention on adults being diagnosed with ADHD—“attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder”: a condition that causes individuals’ focus to swing between extremes of hyperfocus and inattention. In Dirty Laundry: Why Adults with ADHD Are So Ashamed and What We Can Do to Help Rich Pink and Rox Emery, the duo behind the social media brand ADHD_Love, offer help for the newly- or not-yet-diagnosed to understand how to better manage their lives amidst the push and pull of ADHD impulses, as well as tips for their loved ones to meet them where they are.

In November 2019 someone who had worked in the Trump administration anonymously published a book called A Warning. It turned out that the author was Miles Taylor, a young security expert who had also worked for George W. Bush. Blowback: A Warning to Save Democracy from the Next Trump is Taylor’s argument, bearing his real name on the cover, for how the US will end up governed by another Trump-like figure unless steps are taken to protect democratic institutions. The Fourth Turning Is Here: What the Seasons of History Tell Us about How and When This Crisis Will End is a less pragmatically-grounded prophecy about where America is headed, penned by historical theorist Neil Howe, who sees history as a series of 80-100-year periods divided by “turnings”—think The Civil War, The New Deal/WWII, the Revolutionary War—with the fourth one due to arrive imminently.

Fans of action and international intrigue will want to check out Daniel Silva’s new art crime thriller The Collector as well as Brad Thor’s Ukraine war thriller Dead Fall.

Somebody's Fool by Richard Russo concludes the trilogy that began in 1993 with Nobody’s Fool.

Colson Whitehead continues the Harlem saga that began with Harlem Shuffle with Crook Manifesto, the first sequel from the award-winning author who’s never been shy about surprising his readers.

If you’re a fan of Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Blood and Ash series and were worrying you wouldn’t have a new book to read this summer, fear not—A Soul of Ash and Blood picks up where the series left off last March.

Why not spend some vacation time contemplating the boundary between work and home with After Work: A History of the Home and the Fight for Free Time?
