36 new eBooks and audiobooks we’re looking forward to this week and next
Welcome back to New & Hot Reads, where we talk about some of the most anticipated books coming out now
Jim Carrey has written a novel. It is called Memoirs and Misinformation. It’s about a Hollywood actor named… guess! … You got it! His name is Jim Carrey. Jim Carrey (the character in the book) is growing old and losing his sense of self, and not even his good friend Nicholas Cage can help. (We’re not making this up. However, we cannot speak for Jim Carrey or his co-author Dana Vachon.) The audiobook is narrated by… Jeff Daniels. (Sorry, that was a trick.)
If that Jim Carrey book sounds a bit like a Charlie Kaufman movie -- he’s also got a novel coming out. Kaufman’s book, Antkind, is about a lost cinematic masterpiece that took 90 years to make and whose only viewer labours to recreate it from the single surviving frame. If you’ve picked up new hobbies in the last few months of home-boundedness, this may resonate.
Completely unrelated to the musings of Hollywood types is Grown Ups by Marian Keyes. It’s about a trio of brothers, their partners, their exes, their kids, and a lot of expensive trips paid for by Jessie, wife of Johnny the eldest brother. It opens with an explosive series of revelations spouted by Cara, wife to Ed the middle brother, who’s just suffered a concussion and isn’t feeling quite herself. By the end, she won’t be the only one with a headache. For a book concerned with the worries of adulthood, it’s a surprisingly brisk, pleasurable read.
Speaking of purely pleasurable reading, Kevin Kwan, author of Crazy Rich Asians and its 2 sequels is back with Sex and Vanity. It’s exactly what readers want from Kwan: a story of a well-to-do woman of mixed heritage falling in love with the wrong man at the wrong time.
