Some of the best books coming out this week

We recently added a Horror section to these updates to better represent the surge of talent working in this genre. Previously we’d tucked them into Literary Fiction or Speculative Fiction, but that got increasingly awkward, with so many books working at a high level of literary art while employing fantastical and speculative elements as central pieces of story and character. And it turns out we weren’t a moment too soon, as this week brings the latest from Nick Cutter, a tale of an ancient evil awoken in a small town called Feast While You Can, a scary YA story about the deep dark woods by CG Drews, and a bunch more.

Speaking of difficult-to-classify books and authors, Stephen King’s beloved novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, which was the basis of the Morgan Freeman & Tim Robbins movie of (nearly) the same name, was originally published in King’s 1982 4-novella non-horror collection Different Seasons. That collection featured a pair of other novellas, Apt Pupil and The Body, which went on to successful movie adaptations of their own (the latter being retitled “Stand by Me”) and finding the books has always required readers to study up on the King bibliography. But now The Shawshank Redemption (with assumed apologies to Ms. Hayworth) is available on its own as an audiobook. King’s work has always worked well in audio, with the voices of his characters bearing marks of local vernacular, and the late Frank Muller’s performance here is first-rate.

In 2015 Glory Edim founded “Well-Read Black Girl,” a book-centred community for Black women to come together and share in the written work of marginalized writers of all kinds. Her purpose was to uplift the stories of Black women. In Gather Me: A Memoir in Praise of the Books That Saved Me Edim shares her own story. As the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, she grew up in Virginia as an outsider both racially and culturally. In books, with the words of writers like Maya Angelou, Audre Lord, Nikki Giovanni and others, she found community and the strength to find her voice—on full display in this moving memoir.
