A few of the books we’re most looking forward to this week

Five years ago, Dr. Anthony Fauci’s name was best-known by those versed in the history of the AIDS pandemic. Back then, in his role as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, Dr. Fauci was targeted by a protest movement desperate to see life-saving treatments put into use, ultimately leading to his endorsement of a “parallel track” model (see the 2016 book How to Survive a Plague for more) that allowed some drugs to be administered to AIDS patients before the clinical trials were concluded. So when the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, with his reputation for caution coupled with his demonstrated ability to hear opposition and reach compromise without sacrificing fundamental principles of medicine, Dr. Fauci seemed an obvious choice to lead the public health response—and it’s in that role that he became a household name. On Call: A Doctor's Journey in Public Service is Dr. Fauci’s memoir, which starts with his boyhood in Brooklyn and takes him the sides of seven presidents and the front lines of battles against a range of infectious disease.

Between the ongoing series of Inspector Poirot movies based on the beloved books of Agatha Christie and Rian Johnson’s Knives Out movies, the “locked room” mystery has been having something of a moment. Ram Murali’s debut novel Death in the Air joins this moment, with a murder mystery set amidst some extremely rich vacationers at an elite spa situated at the foot of the Himalayas. Wealthy son of privilege Ro Krishna hits a rough patch in his law career and decides to treat himself to some top-notch self-care—but during his stay the spa starts racking up a body count, and Ro can’t help his lawyerly instincts from launching a low-key investigation. A perfect read to take along on a murder-free (and work-free) vacation of your own.

In Craft: Stories I Wrote for the Devil, poet Ananda Lima has written a collection of stories bound together not by a theme or the characters in them, but by a framing tale: a writer slept with the devil at a Halloween party in 1999, and these are stories she has written for him. So while it’s a bundle of discretely mind-bending works of fiction, it’s also, in a sense, a love story between a writer and her readership of one.
