A few of the books we’re most looking forward to this week

Maisie Dobbs, the first novel by Jacqueline Winspear in the eponymous series of mystery novels, was first published in 2003. Starting in the aftermath of the First World War, the books have followed investigator and psychologist Maisie Dobbs through the 1920s and into Europe’s descent into WWII, with the 18th book, The Comfort of Ghosts, taking place in 1945 as Britain begins to chart its post-war future. It is the last Maisie Dobbs book that Winspear plans to write. Though the author claims not to have set out in the beginning to write a war novel (let alone 18 of them), her fascination WWI and the course of events that followed ended up filling in the background of these beloved mysteries with rich detail rooted in those pivotal events, and mirroring her own characters’ struggle with concepts of guilt and innocence.

Leila Mottley, author of the 2022 Oprah-approved novel Nightcrawling, is following up her breakout debut boldly: with her debut book of poetry. woke up no light is a book of “hoods”—comprised of sections entitled “girlhood,” “neighborhood,” “falsehood,” and “womanhood.” She of course is drawing comparisons to other young Black American poets such as Amanda Gorman (Call Us What We Carry) and Morgan Parker (There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyoncé), but the comparisons only highlight how unique Mottley’s approach is.

As a specialist in adolescent psychiatry, Dr. Jack Turban knows better than just about anyone what kids are going through—and how to explain it to adults. His posts on social media about the science of gender lay out in clear language what science can tell us about gender, sex, and sexuality, and what supportive healthcare for young LGBTQ+ folks really looks like (hint: it’s quite unlike what newspaper opinion writers have been so worked up about lately). In Free to Be: Understanding Kids & Gender Identity, Dr. Turban explores the science, medicine, and yes even the politics, of gender identity through the lens of a trio of young people who don’t fit the biological gender binary—itself a concept Dr. Turban explains as a wholly human-invented simplification of what we actually see in genetics, internal and external physiology, endocrinology, and neurology. With a clear, compassionate tone, Dr. Turban makes a scientifically-sound case for providing support and care for kids navigating a path to their true selves.
