Some of the best books coming out this week and next

Heading into the season of family gatherings, a couple of new books on managing those intimate relationships promise to make things a little easier through winter and hopefully beyond… The Little Book of Parenting: How to Nurture Your Child to Their Full Potential by Chinyelo Kunz begins by helping parents set themselves a sturdy emotional foundation, and then proceeds to offer bite-sized takeaways that even the most harried parent will find a way to put to use. Feeding the Mouth That Bites You: Parenting Teenagers into Adulthood by Kenneth Wilgus is an updated edition of the 2015 book on how to parent through the teen years into adulthood without losing your relationship with your kid—or any fingers. And for adults who’ve chosen to avoid these challenges entirely, there’s Others Like Me: The Lives of Women without Children, a survey of women from different parts of the world in different situations who’ve found fulfillment outside of parenthood. And for this in particularly dire situations there’s Surrounded by Liars: How to Stop Half-Truths, Deception, and Gaslighting from Ruining Your Life.

Eve Babitz lived a remarkable life (notably without marrying or having children). She’s the model in the famous photo of Salvador Dali playing chess against a nude young woman. She wrote several semi-fictionalized memoirs about growing up in Hollywood in the 40s and 50s. She designed album covers for 60s music legends Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield. Despite all her achievements, most of the press coverage of Babitz during her most creatively active period was about the men she was alleged to be dating. When Babitz died in 2021 at the age of 78, a trove of letters was found that tied her to someone more prestigious than any man at her side: literary lion and fellow chronicler of California, Joan Didion. While the two were often compared in reviews of their work, in Didion & Babitz journalist Lili Anolik weaves a story from these primary sources of two women whose friendship burned brightly and eventually burnt out entirely.

Nick Louth returns with The Last Ride, which is the second book in his new Detective Jan Talantire series, landing just six months after the series kicked off with The Two Deaths of Ruth Lyle.

Jamison Shea’s I Am the Dark That Answers When You Call is the YA horror sequel to last year’s I Feed Her to the Beast.

Nicole Glover’s The Improvisers is a standalone novel set in her Murder & Magic universe, blending historical fiction and magic with a story of a gifted young pilot whose skills are in high demand during the era or prohibition.
