Remember back in mid-2020 when every email from a colleague you hadn’t seen in person in several weeks began with, “I hope this finds you well”? The sentiment was nice, but after a while it started to feel… weird. Does Deb from accounting truly hope this email to approve an overdue invoice from an irate vendor finds me well? No more than any of us pledge ourselves, “Yours, truly” or even sincerely mean “Sincerely.” In Natalie Sue’s debut novel I Hope This Finds You Well, and office worker named Jolene cannot send an email to her overly-familiar colleagues without including what she really feels, even if it requires her to type it in white text so it goes unread. Jolene gets caught. Sensitivity training—and hilarity (and an IT screw-up giving her access to everyone’s emails)—ensues.

While working for Facebook as a lead counsel, Bärí A. Williams was steeped in the culture of Big Tech at its height of world-changing influence; as a Black woman, she brought an all too rare perspective to that culture, which she shares in her new memoir/manifesto Seen Yet Unseen: A Black Woman Crashes the Tech Fraternity. It’s a perspective familiar to Denise Young, former head of HR at Apple and author of When We Are Seen: How to Come Into Your Power—and Empower Others Along the Way.

David Allen is a name known well to the last generation of Silicon Valley mavericks: he’s the author of the 2001 book on productivity, Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity. While few have ever fully implemented (and stuck to) Allen’s “43 folders” methodology, his ethos towards time and task management shaped the thinking of managers around the world, and spawned the phrase, “inbox zero” to refer to an inbox with every message sorted and flagged for follow-up at an appropriate time. Much of what made GTD popular was how it gave adherents a sense of control over the things other people tossed their way, and now all those other people are invited into the GTD way with Allen’s new book, Team: Getting Things Done with Others.

People not working together as a team is the fuel that drives the novels of Crazy Rich Asians author Kevin Kwan. Lies and Weddings is the story of a suddenly penniless would-be Duke (with a side gig as a supermodel) who decides to use the occasion of his sister’s tropical island wedding to seduce a wealthy woman before the island’s volcano erupts, marking a turn for Kwan as the novel’s heat includes sources other than friction (of several kinds) between characters.

Though she’s made her reputation as a writer of romance novels, Nora Roberts has always been a genre-fluid writer, launching her futuristic …in Death crime fiction series under the pen name “J. D. Robb” in the 90s, and later the D. C. Detectives series under her own name, not to mention several trilogies over the past decade or so that we might now recognize as precursors to the reigning hybrid genre known as “romantasy.” In Roberts’ new book Mind Games a young woman who shares a clairvoyant gift with her grandmother grows up psychically linked to her parents’ killer—like something Stephen King might have written.

For his part, Stephen King’s new book You Like It Darker collects a dozen of his short stories, including many never previously published.
