Celebrities! We know them, we love them, and we love when they recommend books.

Thanks to Bookstagram and Booktok, celebrity book clubs suddenly seem to be everywhere. From Academy Award-winning actresses to retired politicians, there are many very famous hands you can entrust your reading life to. To help you decide which one is worth following, we’ve rounded up the top celebrity book clubs and what to expect from each—so you can decide which of these stars will be your guiding literary light.

Oprah’s Book Club

You get a book, you get a book! Beloved media mogul and cultural icon Oprah Winfrey has been recommending books to readers for decades. The idea was born out of discussions between Oprah and her intern at the time, Alice McGee, who shared a love of literature. Oprah’s Book Club launched back in 1996 as a segment on The Oprah Winfrey Show and today over 100 titles bear the signature “O” logo. Oprah’s selections range from emerging writers to literary legends and aim to provoke conversation and spark enlightenment amongst fellow readers.

Reese’s Book Club

From her leading roles in Legally Blonde and Election to her behind-the-scenes work on Where the Crawdads Sing and Daisy Jones and the Six, Reese Witherspoon has made a career of taking books to the big screen. It’s no surprise she started a book club of her own. Launched in June 2017, Reese’s Book Club focuses on female-centric stories and looks to “deepen our connection to books, authors and ourselves.” Reese’s picks are always by women and about women, and while they may range in genre, the stories always pack an emotional punch. Reese has been known to adapt her book club picks for TV and movies, so if you prefer to have read the book first, this is the club for you.

Each month, the television personality shares a new favourite book and discusses it live on air via Q&A sessions with the author. #ReadWithJenna picks are vast, ranging from emotional literary fiction to lighthearted comedies and gripping thrillers.

Since then, its list has grown monthly, featuring a diverse selection of genres and authors, who often feature on Good Morning America themselves sharing exciting book news and answering reader questions.

GOOP Book Club

Actress turned wellness guru Gwyneth Paltrow started Goop as a weekly newsletter in 2008; it has since grown to expand into e-commerce, fashion, beauty, wellness, and multimedia. GOOP Press is its publishing imprint, and the GOOP Book Club officially kicked off in 2020 with the aim to read books that “make us think, that move us, that raise complex questions, that open up important conversations.” GOOP’s most recent book club pick is Circa by Devi S. Laskar from June 2022. While we wait for their next pick, there’s plenty of earlier picks to read through this ongoing hiatus.

Obama's Book List

Is this a book club? Technically not, but it’s a surefire way to find amazing reads, personally picked by former American president and bestselling author Barack Obama. A voracious reader, he released his first official list of recommended books in the summer of 2009, during his first term as president. Through his second term the sharing of his summer reading list became an annual tradition. After leaving office he began regularly releasing his personal best-of-the-year lists for books, films, television shows, and music. There are over 100 book recommendations on Obama's book list so far, and you can find them all here.
