    Slightly disappointed.

I have enjoyed both previous Fredrick Blackman books, but this one was a struggle. The first two thirds were tedious and there were far too many times when the dialogue switched from one character to another. The subject of ice hockey is not a familiar one to me and it was difficult to empathise with the way in which it was portrayed. At the start of the last third, there was a serious study of a very difficult topic and it briefly came to life, but then the conclusion was underwhelming and I was almost pleased to have finished it. Probably too fragmented and too long.

    A Brilliant and Thought-Provoking Read

Every so often you come across a book that you know is going to live with you for a long time. This is one of those books. The opening is a bit hard going as he sets out all of the characters, but press on - the development is vital for what is to come. You are told from the outset, and then as the book progresses that something serious is going to happen - but you are kept guessing as what and to whom. When you get to the part of the book that the event occurs and finally see what it will be, you hope against hope you are wrong. It becomes almost the equivalent of watching a TV programme from behind your hands. After that turning point, the book starts to challenge the reader's values, making you really debate how you would act were you to be in the same situation as the protagonists. The final outcome manages to be fulfilling, whilst staying true to the real world, where justice is not always done. Overall, one of the most thought provoking and rewarding novels I have ever read.

Big problems in a small town.

All about obsession - this time people in a Scandavian town obsessed with ice hockey. Great range of characters who are good examples of how people react in a crisis with everyone, in their own ways, looking out for number one.
