    Dark Age

The continuing saga of Darrow, Mustang, Sevro of the Red Rising the 5th book is just as brilliantly plotted as the previous 4 with twists and turns you never expect. It's another page turner with the same great characters

    Worthy

If you’ve read this far into the series, you don’t need a review. You’re probably binging these like a stack of comic books. This instalment seemed to have more threads than its predecessors, but that makes sense considering the number of characters we’ve come to know. And I say that despite the rate at which they tend to die. Do Golds have an evolved capacity for suffering?

Dark, Brutal, And Leaves Me Wanting More

WOW. Okay, so... all of THAT happened. I honestly don't know how Pierce Brown does it. These books are among the most intense, nail-biting, and brutal books I've ever read. And I love every single word of his beautiful, unique writing style. This is definitely not a story someone unfamiliar with the series can pick up. There is SO MUCH happening that it's often to keep up, and sometimes I had to take some time to remember everything that happened in previous books. But I was never bored. Even when the pages were packed with expertly crafted and thoughtful dialogue (never let it be said that Brown can't write an amazing speech!), I was all but salivating for the next paragraph. While there is a lot going on, it all leads to incredible action scenes where gore and carnage is plentiful, and the reader is constantly rooting for the hero. Every character is engaging and unique. It's hard to tell whom was my favourite (though I will always love Virginia), as each person added to the overall story and expanded the incredible world. Even the pacing was fantastic for them, as certain characters would have something dire to them that would allow new characters to take centre stage. This said, this is the darkest story I've read in the series so far. It does not hold back, and there were more than a few "did you really have to do that" moments. While the ending didn't crush my soul like GOLDEN SON did, there were at least five or six major plot points that had me internally screaming and begging for Brown to show some mercy. I cannot get enough of these books, and I can't wait to see how it all comes to ahead. If anyone hasn't started this series, it is something that MUST go on your reading list. Fans of sci-fi and Game of Thrones will soon find themselves howling with the rest of Darrow's Risers.

Pierce Brown's strongest book so far

This is likely the strongest book of the series. One qualm I had with Iron Gold was the way Pierce Brown depicted Ephraim and Lyria; they seemed to have only been added for the sake of adding diversity. However, in Dark Age, we see these two grow and become essential to the plot in a way that makes them much more intriguing than they were previously. Darrow is also well written; his flimsy decisions in Iron Gold that seemed to go against the knowledge he had gained from previous experiences appeared no longer. And one must not forget that Mustang is now a POV character. This book also delves futher into current situations found in today's society; racisms, eugenics, gender inequality are all present. Moreover Brown demonstartes how conflict of interest in a democratic society may precipitate lives into chaos in a way that is mch apparent and vivid. Another aspect that I thoroughly enjoyed was the developement of Obsidian culture and traditions. No longer do we see them as brain-less brutes, but as having keen political and visionary-like minds despite the way he were treated by Gold. Brown's fifth book, in spite of being dark (as is implied by the name), had some great humour which adds some much needed warmth to tis otherwise dark, dark book (no that that's a bad thing, mind you). I'd highly recommend giving this book a read, you'll thoroughly enjoy it!

90 percent hit, 10 percent miss

For me, this was the weakest of the series so far, with one or two too many unnecessary twists and some redundantly gratuitous brutality. However, with that being said, the overall quality is still good and most of the book has the same ingredients that make the series so enjoyable.
