    Worth a Second Read

This is an exciting police procedural, character study, and travelogue of the Brittany coast in France. The police commissioner is a study in depth, and leads the reader through a detailed process of deduction to uncover the murderer and the motive when an elderly hotel owner is found slain in the hotel restaurant. The descriptions are brief, but detailed, and the history of the Brittany area becomes very much a part of the story.. The book was enthralling and is well worth a second read..

nice first-in-series mystery, set in France

I am a fan of pretty much all things French, and also a fan of mysteries, so I was thrilled to find a new author (to me, at least) of mysteries set in France. Even better, the mysteries are set in Brittany, which I very much enjoyed visiting many years ago. So, in the interests of full disclosure, please be aware that I am naturally a bit biased from the start towards books in this series! With that said, I very much liked Death in Brittany, finding the location and descriptions of local society to be enjoyable (I now want to visit again), the characters engaging, and the mystery suitably puzzling. I especially enjoyed the interaction between Dupin, who has somehow been “exiled” from Paris, and his assistant, Nolwenn, who has a grasp of the local people and customs, and serves sort of as his “cultural translator”. I enjoyed this enough to read it over the space of a couple of days, and all-in-all, it is a very nice first-in-series. I look forward very much to reading more titles in the series. The only downside I noticed was that at times, in my opinion, Dupin can be just a little bit too cynical. Others may not feel that way…. Finally, a warning - I realized that I could not read this book while hungry, since the descriptions of Breton cuisine made me even hungrier, and it may do so for you too! And, please note that for me, a four-star review is really good. I only give five-star reviews to maybe one in twenty or thirty books, since I want to leave a little room at the top.

Takes too long to get going

Very slow first half; fascinating second half. Not a touch on Bruno!

    Telephone Book

I'm not sure if they still produce a phone book in your area but if they do then read that instead. This reads like a travel book with historical references.
