    Historical Romance

Highland Jewel by May McGoldrick Royal Highlander 2 A mother’s promise should never be broken...even if it takes over two decades to keep. No matter how hard Caroline tried to get back to see her son – she was thwarted – until this book allowed it to finally happen. This book begins with a promise made by a soon-to-be-queen to a son she had before the marriage. Her intentions are good but political intrigue keeps her away. She will find someone to help her bring this about and that man is a man of honor, soldier and so much more! In this book we have Maisie Murray and Niall Campbell meeting when he saves her from the sword of a soldier in the midst of a rally the soldiers are to break up. Maisie and Fiona, Niall’s sister, are active in a reform group working to improve the situation of those oppressed by the English. The times are dangerous with spies and informers working against those who are activists. In spite of the tense situation Maisie and Niall eventually come to an understanding but of course, something throws a wrench in their happily ever after...at least for awhile. This book has some overlapping time with book one in the series and has a number of the same characters in both books. It is not essential to read book one to understand this book but I really did enjoy Highland Crown and highly recommend it, too. This book has murder, mayhem, intrigue, history, love, loss and a whole lot more. The history is there but not the main part of the story...though history impacts more than one person in this book in big ways. What I liked: * Maisie’s strength of character and willingness to work for what she believes is right * Niall’s commitment to family and to what he believes is right. * The romance between Maisie and Niall * The closeness that develops between Isabella, Maisie and Morrigan * Learning how people reacted when Maisie’s true self is revealed * The bad guys getting caught * Caroline being able to keep the promise she made to her son * Wondering who will have their story next...Morrigan or perhaps Fiona or maybe someone else. What I didn’t like: * The bad guys… * The way people in power use power for their own gain (I do wish this would change but it never does) * Having the book end Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Paperbacks for the ARC – This is my honest review. 5 Stars

    Brilliant

Can I just say this story was amazing? After the first in this series, it was thrilling to continue on with the descriptive narrative of this fabulous author team in another top of the charts historical romance. The opening brings us into the mind of Princess Caroline of Brunswick -Wolfenbuttel contemplating her marriage to her first cousin, the English Prince. Her son Cinaed, only four is ripped away from her for his journey to Scotland to the land of his father. We begin in the past, go forward and then go back to find out what happened to lead our heroine Maisie and hero, Niall to where they are now. It holds everything and more that are the key ingredients to a successful story. True historical happenings with a twist entwining intrigue, suspense, political unrest along with unrest of the people, spies, the Queen and her son along with Maisie, her sister Isabelle who is tied to Cinaed and Maisie's best friend Fiona, sister to the man she falls in love with Niall. I could go on and on about this book, but truly it is one you need to read because once you start, you seriously cannot put it down. I have to say both books in this series are truly inspired and I cannot wait for more!

    Highland Jewel!

The plot seemed very disjointed. I couldn’t follow the story and became disinterested. I think this story needs a little more editing. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.

    Love

Adventurous and somewhat dangerous plot with great characters and full of love. A Mother’s love; New love; and the love of freedom. They all come with a price. Niall is such a brave man, very smart, an expert at what he does, protective and a perfect gentleman. Maisie is so brave, a spitfire and very smart as well. They make a fierce couple; their situation is dire and as their life churns their love is undeniably bold and sustains them. Very interesting heartfelt story, page-turner which realistically captures the determination and sacrifice we willingly endure for the ones we truly love. Actually kept me up past my bedtime on a work-night reading. :)

    Fantastic Tale

Highland Jewel, the second book in the Royal Highlander Series, is a splendid blending of romance, action, and history. The story takes place following the Napoleonic Wars, a time of political unrest and social upheaval across the British Isles. Danger, secrecy, intrigue, betrayal, narrow escapes, and rescues, and a cast of absolutely marvelous characters come together to create fantastic Highland adventure and a dramatic romance. Niall Campbell is a decorated war hero who is tired of war and its aftermath. He wants to return to the highlands and live in peace. Maisie Murray is an activist for social reform, particularly suffrage for all citizens. Niall and Maisie meet through his sister Fiona (also a social activist). They fall in love, but tragedy strikes endangering their desire to marry. Niall must rescue his sister from a charge of treason. Maisie seeks refuge with her sister to avoid the same fate. How does it work out? Can Fiona be saved? Is their hope for Niall and Maisie? This one is a real page-turner. I enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Oh, look for a big surprise at the end. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
