    Not your typical marriage

This book was difficult for me to read. Not just because of the injustice of a black man’s incarceration based on false charges but because of the continuing injustice and anger that follow. It is well written with beautiful prose and insightful observations. That said, it was difficult to enjoy because of the pain, anger and deceit of the protagonists. Although the ending is one of forgiveness and hope, the book left me feeling sad a little empty - not unlike the American marriage it portrays.

Maybe I'm not supposed to get it...

4.25/5 I didn't get so many things; the characters, the nonchalance of an innocent man going to jail for something he didn't do, what year story was happening in, etc.... but I think that's the point. I think the author was trying to tell the reader that this is a timeless story, and the characters are circumstances are more commonplace than we would otherwise think. Overall, a good quick read.

    Life is messy!

Good read! The characters were regular folks doing the best they could under circumstances that sadly have not changed for many years & will probably continue for many more...racism lives on 'quietly' in many instances, but it is alive and well. It does feel sad and perhaps inevitable at the conclusion of the story.
