    Color me intrigued

Embers is the follow-up to Long Shadows, picking up about a month later. Using a similar construct as the first in the series, a singular case plays out within the novella while the more-involved plotlines continue to build. Embers started a little slower for me. I think this was partially due to the author organizing the pieces as the new details and players emerged. Once those were in order, the pacing became fast and furious and I was glued to my kindle. My favorite aspect of this series is how clear the emotions come through, particularly the tense moments. Whether it be a strained familial relationship or during a crime investigation, the mood is palpable and I find myself pulled into the story as if I’m witnessing the scene firsthand. Embers featured more insight into all the characters, both primary and secondary. With so many secondary characters, I’d expect the plot to get muddled. However, they support the storyline perfectly. I especially liked how the feds were pulled into the story and added another layer to the conflict. The relationship between Jericho and Wade also continued to play out in the background, with things heating up between the two men. The tension between Jericho and Wade radiates off the page, belying all the underlying feelings they have for one another. Although there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding the couple, the emotion is clear and the slow reveal exciting. I’m eager to see how things build in the next two novellas, as this book only served to get me more invested in their relationship. If you like law enforcement books or series with a lot of intertwined characters, this is definitely a series to pick up. *Reviewed for Alpha Book Club*
