  • Humour and heart

This book follows the story of lonely millennial Chad and his baby boomer uncle Martin and both of their love lives; set alongside the dynamic residents, visitors, and employees of Eldernest Lodge. I love how this book spans generations so effortlessly, from elementary school life, working life, through to retirement. There are so many relatable gems in this book. Beloved characters that make you smile and remind you of someone you know, love, or miss. Flying the Nest is such a thought-provoking read. I found myself contemplating the way we earn our independence into adulthood only to lose much of our autonomy again later on. The author, Joy Norstrom gently navigates love, heartbreak, and sadness yet somehow manages to find room to make it light, funny, and clever. Flying the Nest tackles issues such as class, age, sexual orientation, fidelity, and loneliness while challenging the reader to dispel misconceptions and stereotypes. And yet, this book is ultimately about connection; love (both romantic and familial) and friendship. I heartily recommend this book to both young and older adults. Fans of JoJo Moyes will appreciate the way Joy Norstrom balances emotional subject-matter with laugh out loud humour.
