    It's a Superb Sequel!

This is another well-crafted, fast-paced mystery laden with intrigue in a world which feels real. Real enough in fact, that parasol duelling, and Maddie’s world, seem like a natural part of our history. Maddie’s keen observations, her hunt for the truth, her sensitivity to and maneuverability within social classes - all these create a rich world of spies, mystery, espionage, and danger. Jayne Barnard has created more than a romp through steampunk New York – it’s an intriguing mystery which makes it hard to put the book down with its unexpected twists and turns. Although the sensibilities of the Victorian steam era are different than those in the established European steam-aristocracies and societies, the personal, financial and social stakes are just as high. As always, the question remains, can Maddie, an independent woman in an era which frowns upon her sex, save another woman in trouble, her reproving father’s interests, or herself? This is a great read for anyone of any age and I highly recommend it – I couldn’t put it down.
