  • An absorbing story

"Our Darkest Night" is set in Italy from 1943 to 1946. At the beginning of this novel, Antonia is living in Venice with her physician father. As Jews their lives have been deteriorating due to the Nazi collaboration with the Italians. Antonia’s father seeks the help of a friend who is a priest, and the priest arranges for Nico, a young Italian who is a former seminary student, to take Antonia away from Venice to keep her safe. His family are farmers, and Antonia (now called Nina) and Nico, posing as a newlywed couple, seek shelter in Nico’s family’s farmhouse. As time moves on Nina and Nico fall in love, but Nico is arrested by the Germans and is taken away. Sometime later the German in charge returns, having discovered Nina's true identity, and arrests her too. Several months after the end of WWII Nina and Nico find each other, return to the farm and are reunited with Nico’s family. A story of hope and resilience, “Our Darkest Night” is a great read!

  • Riveting historical fiction

This book is a heart breaking but ultimately uplifting fictional portrayal of a Jewish woman's story in WWII Italy. This story is a reminder of man's inhumanity to man but also of the sacrifices that truly good people are willing to make for the betterment of those unjustly persecuted. It reminds us of the evil that can be found in the world but also of the good. I know that I always hope for the triumph of good over evil and this ultimately romantic tale left me with a feeling that that is possible. As I read Nina and Nico's story I not only cried and laughed but felt fear, despair, heartbreak and hope. This historical fiction is a well researched riveting tale that I hope will help us to remember a time and atrocities that hopefully will never be repeated.
