    Insightful, riveting, and incredibly atmospheric!

Songs of Love and War is an intriguing tale that sweeps you to Co. Cork in the early 1900s when Ireland is full of unrest and upheaval not only due to the Great War being waged on the fields of Europe but in their own countryside where the simmering anger and need for self-identity, patriotism, and independence from Anglo rule are about to come to a head. The prose is poetic and vividly described. The three main characters Kitty, Birdie, and Celia are strong and independent, and their lives are bound and entangled together by the magnificent Castle Deverill that graces the Irish hillside and in some way each calls home. And the plot is an engaging saga filled with self-discovery, familial drama, social stratification, spiritual occurrences, tragedy, heartbreak, romance, war, life, loss, and friendship. Songs of Love and War is an exquisitely written, exceptionally detailed, beautiful start to a trilogy that is sure to be a big hit with historical fiction fans and book clubs everywhere, and you can be sure that Daughters of Castle Deverill, Deverill Chronicles #2, is already on my TBR list.

    Lovely Read

NetGalley provided a copy of the ARC in exchange for an honest review. Songs of Love and War by Santa Montefiore is a historical fiction set during the Irish War of Independence. This original read is the story of three friends—Kitty, Bridie and Celia. They come from different backgrounds but their friendship is unwavering. Their joys and struggles are revealed as they come to terms with their individual journey. This well-written novel moves quickly. The characters are developed with strong and identifiable voices. The setting comes to life as well. Santa Montefiore has written a page-turner.

    Captivating

Enjoyed the story and how Ireland's tragic history is interwoven into the lives of the characters. Kitty has become a favorite heroine similar to Scarlett O'Hara except Kitty allows love to guide her whereas Scarlett allowed fear to steer her through her travails. Bridie is similar to most emigrees, struggles to make her new life better and fails to see it is her good traits like honesty, trustworthiness and kindness that improve her lot in life. She, like her brother, Michael, blames everyone for her bad decisions and allows her bitterness and jealousy to rule her decisions. All in all a good read.

    Songs of Love and War

A good read that captured attention. It had a very unsatisfying end that was designed to have the reader buy the next book. It captured the atmosphere of the period well but the end wasn’t just a cliffhanger - it left a number of story threads dangling and so I felt a little cheated by that.
